T R E A S U R E I S L A N D (Windham Classics - ST version) CHAPTER ONE You are in the parlour of the Admiral Benbow Inn. The front door is west, and to the south is the bar. In one corner sits a rough seaman named Billy Bones. Since Billy came to the Inn you've heard many exciting stories about pirates and buried treasure. During the day, Billy pays you to keep a lookout for a one-legged sailor; but on evenings like this, you like to stay in the parlour and talk to him. "TALK TO BILLY" - he says, `Ye want another story, lad? Aye, but you're a curious one. Before I start, though, I'm a bit dry. Please get me some rum'. "S" - you are in the bar. On the counter is a large wooden keg of rum and a row of tankards. The parlour is north. There are stairs leading up to the second floor of the Inn. "GET TANKARD", "GET RUM", "N" - you return to the parlour. Billy is waiting for his rum. "GIVE RUM TO BILLY" - Billy downs the rum in one gulp and begins to tell his story. `You see this scar on me cheek, lad? I won it in a fight against a rat of a sailor named Black Dog. The dirty swab tried to take Flint's Fist from me'. "ASK BILLY ABOUT FLINT'S FIST" - he replies, `Just between you and me matey, Flint's Fist is an oilcloth bundle in the shape of a fist. Inside it is a map to Captain Flint's treasure. "W" - just as you are about to leave, you hear a tapping at the door. "OPEN DOOR" - you go to the door and open it. In front of you stands a man who appears to be blind. He grabs your arm tightly and says, `I'm here to see a swab named Billy Bones'. Startled, you resist, but his grip tightens. "HELP BLIND MAN" - you decide to lead the blind man over to Billy. Billy turns. A look of horror sweeps across his face at the sight of the blind man. `Go away, Pew', exclaims Billy. Pew stuffs a piece of paper into Billy's hand, and quickly feels his way out the door, pushing you to the floor as he leaves. Billy looks at the paper, then slumps in his chair, clutching his chest. His breathing is very weak. "LISTEN TO BILLY" - he gasps, `My seachest... in my room... they want Flint's Fist'. Billy's voice trails off, and he dies. As he slumps over you notice a glint of metal on his neck. "GET METAL" - you take the key from around Billy's neck. You hear a gang of men heading towards the Inn. "S" - you are in the bar. "UP" - you are on the second floor of the Inn, outside Billy's room. There is a torn piece of newspaper at your feet. "GET NEWSPAPER", "OPEN DOOR" - the door is stuck. "KICK DOOR" - the door swings open. You enter the room and close the door behind you. Billy's room is sparsely furnished. The door is west. In the room there is a bureau, a bed, a large seachest, and a mirror. On the floor near the bureau is a broken oil lamp. There is a window on the far wall and you can see the branches of a large tree pushing against the window. "UNLOCK CHEST" - the key fits the lock, but it is so rusted that it will not open the seachest. "OIL LOCK" - you dip your fingers into the oil and dribble it into the lock. "UNLOCK CHEST" - the key slips into place and turns the lock. "OPEN CHEST" - a smell of tobacco and tar rises from the interior. There is nothing visible except some clothing, which you push aside revealing, an oilcloth, some tobacco, some gold, and a spanish watch. "GET GOLD", "GET WATCH", "GET OILCLOTH", "GET TOBACCO", "OPEN WINDOW" - the window opens easily. The branches of a long tree are within reach. "CLIMB TREE" - you climb out the window and down the tree. You are standing at the base of a large tree just east of the Inn. There is a narrow but well-travelled dirt path leading south. Save the game before you continue, for should you meet Doctor Livesey before you reach his estate, he will return you to the Inn and the game will end. "S", "S" - the path ends at a fork. You may go southeast or southwest. "SW" - you cross a drawbridge and pass a monastery. "S" - you are hurrying along a road to Bristol, when you see an old woman emerge from a dirt path off the side of the road. She looks very upset as she walks slowly towards you. "TALK TO WOMAN" - she says, `Oh dear. Oh dear. A poor blind man's got runover and killed down the southwest road'. With that the woman hurries off. "SE" - you are on the Bristol road, which runs northwest and east. A dirt path leads off to the west. You notice a man propped up against a chestnut tree on the side of the road. An empty bottle lies next to him. "EXAMINE MAN" - he has two fingers missing from his left hand. It's Black Dog, don't talk to him. "E" - you run as fast as you can. Soon you come to the estate of Dr. Livesey, a close friend of your family. The Doctor is climbing into his carriage when he sees you approach. `Hello', he calls out. `What are you doing all this way out here?' "GIVE OILCLOTH" - Dr. Livesey says, `Flint's Fist? I have heard rumours about that. Climb up here with me. I know someone who would be very interested in seeing this. Let's ride over to Squire Trelawney's estate and show him this. UP - you climb up into the carriage. After a short ride, you and the Doctor are ushered into Squire Trelawney's presence. You are sitting in Squire Trelawney's living room with the Doctor and the Squire. Squire Trelawney says, `Doctor Livesey tells me you have found something of interest at your Inn. "TELL SQUIRE ABOUT OILCLOTH" - `Let me see this Flint's Fist', says the squire. He takes the oilcloth and cuts the stitches with his pocket knife. Inside the oilcloth is a map of an island. "EXAMINE MAP" - it shows three crosses, one of which says, `Bulk of treasure here'. "EXAMINE NEWSPAPER" - it is dated February the 10th, 1760. It contains an article about Flint's Treasure, and at the bottom of the page is a schedule for arrival and departure times of ships at Bristol. "GIVE NEWSPAPER" - the Squire reads the paper, `There is a ship, the Hispaniola, docked in Bristol, we should be able to charter it if we hurry. Let's go to Bristol. CHAPTER TWO You are on the Bristol Road, your friends the Doctor and the Squire have taken the map and are preparing for the voyage on board the Squire's chartered ship, the Hispaniola. You are enjoying your last few hours on land before you go to sea. You are on a paved road that runs through the town of Bristol. The docks are to the immediate west, and to the north is a tavern. "N" - as you approach the tavern, you are almost knocked over by two sailors who are carrying a keg out of the tavern. `Watch yourself matey', one says as they head off towards the docks. "N" - you are inside the Spy Glass Inn, a rundown tavern filled with drunken sailors. The lighting is poor, and the din is deafening. The whole room reeks of sweat and rum. A man behind the bar waves to you and gestures for you to sit down. "SIT DOWN" - you sit down next to a drunken sailor. The man from behind the bar comes over to you. `Hello, mate. You must be the young one the Squire told me about. I'm the galley cook for your sea voyage. The name's Silver, but you can call me Long John. "EXAMINE SILVER" - he is a tall muscular man, his left leg is cut off by the hip. Under his shoulder he carries a crutch which he manages with surprising dexterity. "ASK SILVER ABOUT LEG" - `Sometimes a gentleman of fortune wanders into a bit of trouble. I lost me leg when I sailed with Captain Flint'. "ASK SILVER ABOUT PEW" - `He's a good-for-nothing pirate'. "ASK SILVER ABOUT PAPER" - `I don't want to talk about the paper'. "ASK SILVER ABOUT BILLY" - `He's a good-for-nothing pirate'. "WAIT" - as your eyes adjust to the lighting you notice a man missing two fingers. It's Black Dog! You lock gazes instantly. The pirate jumps up from his seat, dashing for the door. Silver chases Black Dog out of the door. "WAIT" - Silver returns after a short pursuit. `The louse didn't pay for his rum. He got away this time. When I was outside I heard the Doctor call for all hands on deck. Looks like it's time to board'. Silver heads for the ship. "S", "W" - you climb aboard the Hispaniola. You are on the foredeck, with the midship and the reardeck aft toward the stern of the ship. The crowsnest is aloft. The Doctor introduces you to Captain Smollett who is in charge of the Hispaniola, a 200-ton frigate, for the length of the voyage. Next to him, the Squire looks on as the crew untie the lines and cast off. The Captain steps forward to talk to you. "TALK TO THE CAPTAIN" - he says, `Pleased to meet you, Master Hawkins. Since this is your first sailing trip, you will be the ship's lookout. There is a spyglass in my quarters'. "AFT" - as you leave the foredeck the Doctor calls to you, `We'll be sharing a cabin below deck, Jim. Your stuff is already down there. You can find me there if you need me'. You are midship, a sailor stands behind the wheel steering the ship The foredeck is forward, the reardeck aft, and the crowsnest aloft. There is a stairwell leading down. "DOWN" - you are below deck. The crew's quarters are to port. The cabin you share with the Doctor is to starboard. There are stairs leading up to midship. "AFT" - the Captain's quarters are to port, and the Squire's quarters to starboard. "PORT" - you are in the Captain's cabin. You can see some nautical books and a seachest. "OPEN CHEST", "EXAMINE CHEST" - it contains some clothes and a spyglass. "GET SPYGLASS", "STARBOARD", "FORE", "STARBOARD" - you are in the cabin you share with the Doctor. Your seachest is flush against your bed. The Doctor is here reading a book. "PORT", "AFT", "AFT" - you are in the ship's galley. The quarters and forecastle are forward. There is a hatch in the floor. Silver and the crew are singing merrily! Silver asks you to join. "SING" - you join in the chorus. When you are done you walk back to your cabin. You are back in the cabin you share with the Doctor. The Doctor is here reading a book. "PORT" - "UP" - "AFT" - you are on the rear deck of the Hispaniola. Near you is an apple barrel. The sky has grown cloudy. You hear hushed voices coming from the stern of the ship. You look closely, you see several of the crew whispering amongst themselves. You wonder what they are plotting. "GET APPLE" - there only a few apples left at the bottom of the barrel. As you lean down toward the bottom you suddenly fall into the barrel. "LISTEN CREW" - you hear Silver's voice clearly, `Make sure no-one is around to overhear us'. You hear the footsteps of one of the crew coming toward you. You duck lower into the barrel. "WAIT" - the crew members speak in whispers. `No-one's about deck', says one of the crew. `That's a good lad', says Silver. `Most of the crew is ready to mutiny'. You hear them walk away. You climb out of the barrel and are on the rear deck once more. "FORE" - as you move midships, a large drop of water splashes on your head. You look up into the sky, and notice that the clouds have turned black. It's a squall! You hear the sound of hatches being battened down, and sailors running below deck. "WAIT" - the storm strikes suddenly and relentlessly. Sheets of rain wash over the deck, as the ship pitches and rolls over the swells. Lightning flashes and hits the water with a deafening clap. Loose ropes dangle from the mast, and the steering wheel spins wildly. The footing is getting slippery. "GRAB MAST" - you clutch the mast with all your strength. You wonder how long you'll be able to hold on. "TIE ROPE" - you manage to tie yourself to the mast. Soon the squall subsides, leaving you drenched, but otherwise intact. You drag yourself down to your cabin where you are standing in a puddle of water. "OPEN CHEST" - inside you find some clothes that you packed. "WEAR CLOTHES" - you quickly change into your other set of clothes, and put the old set back in your chest. "PORT" - you hear arguing coming from the forward part of the ship. "FORE" - you are in the ship's forecastle, right below the foredeck. The Squire and the Captain are talking heatedly about the crew. "ASK CAPTAIN ABOUT CREW" - `I don't know where the crew are getting the rum. I assumed that the Squire brought it on board for himself and they some how found it'. The Captain glares at the Squire. "ASK SQUIRE ABOUT CREW" - `I certainly did not bring any rum on board this ship. I'm strictly a brandy man! The crew must have smuggled the rum on board'. The Squire glares at the Captain. "TELL CAPTAIN ABOUT RUM" - `There must be some rum hidden on this ship. If you find it, Jim, make sure you tell one of us', says the Captain. "TELL CAPTAIN ABOUT SILVER" - `Good work Jim', he says. `Thanks to you, their treacherous scheme won't take us by surprise. I'll find the Doctor and tell him right now'. With that the Captain leaves. "TELL SQUIRE ABOUT SILVER" - `Pirates! Mutiny! How could this have happened? I was so careful when I hired the crew. I'll tell Doctor Livesey immediately'. He then storms out of the room. "AFT" - you hear the sound of rolling barrels coming from the galley. "AFT" - you can still hear the barrels. "AFT" - you are in the ship's galley, there is a hatch in the floor. Silver's parrot is perched near a wooden cabinet. Long John Silver is supervising two sailors carrying in new barrels of provisions. "FORE", "FORE" - you are outside your cabin, on the door there is a piece of paper. "READ PAPER" - the paper says, `To Jim and Squire Trelawny, I'm in the forecastle, come and see me'. It is signed by Doctor Livesey. "FORE" - you are in the ship's forecastle, the Doctor is sitting in one of the wooden chairs. On the table in front of him are several charts. "READ CHARTS" - the Doctor smiles at you. `So you're becoming interested in navigation. These charts show latitude and longitude. By looking at the stars and consulting these charts, we know where we are. Right now we're a few hundred miles off the coast of Florida. "GET CHARTS" - `Leave the charts here', says the Doctor. `The Captain will want to look at them. If you like you can read them over my shoulder'. "AFT", "AFT, "AFT" - you are in the ship's galley, there is a hatch in the floor. Silver's parrot is perched near a wooden cabinet. "OPEN CABINET" - you open the cabinet, the smell of rum is very strong. You can see a knife and a packet of food on one of the shelves. The parrot begins to squawk, `Pieces of Eight'. "GET FOOD", "GET KNIFE", "DOWN" - you climb down the ladder into the storage deck. The stench down here hits you in the face. Even before your eyes adjust to the darkness, you hear the chickens screeching and the goat gnawing on the sides of its tiny pen. Barrels, casks, crates, and sacks are piled up on top of each other. "MOVE CASKS" - you slide aside some casks revealing a small keg. "EXAMINE KEG" - you discover that the keg is filled with rum. This must be the crew's hidden supply! "UP", "FORE", "FORE", "UP", "FORE" - you are on the foredeck of the Hispaniola, the captain is supervising two sailors who are changing the sails. "TELL CAPTAIN ABOUT KEG" - `Aha! Well the crew's little party has ended'. The Captain disappears below deck for a few minutes, then returns with the keg. Several crew members follow him and watch helplessly as the Captain heaves the keg overboard. As the crew members resume their tasks, you hear them mutter among themselves. "UP" - you climb up to the crowsnest. From here you can see the entire deck of the ship. On the horizon, you see nothing but sea and air. "USE SPYGLASS" - off in the distance you see a land mass. It's Treasure Island. You call out, `Land Ho'. You drop the spyglass in the excitment as the crew rushes topside to see Treasure Island for themselves. CHAPTER THREE You are on the foredeck of the Hispaniola, which is moored about 100 yards off the southern shore of Treasure Island. The crew has lowered one of the small landing boats and are about to row ashore. Long John Silver directs the shore party, while Doctor Livesey and the Squire are below deck talking to the Captain. "ENTER BOAT" - you slip down the ladder without anyone noticing, and hide under the crawlspace near the bow of the landing boat. Just as you're getting comfortable, the crew casts off and rows to shore. The boat lands on the beach of Treasure Island, there is a thicket to the north. Silver and the men walk west along the beach. You climb out of the landing boat and almost stumble over a small shell partially covered with sand. "GET SHELL", "N" - you are in a thicket north of the beach, on the ground you can see a gold coin. "GET COIN" - you hear the loud snap of a breaking branch and suddenly you are face to face with the strangest man you've ever seen. The surprise is mutual as you as both turn in opposite directions. You are running to the southwest. You come upon some of the crew of the Hispaniola who are sitting around a large and smoky bonfire. Silver turns and says, `Ah, it's our young friend. Well since you're so persistent why don't you sit by me?' "SIT DOWN" - you sit down next to Long John Silver. "ASK SILVER ABOUT SHIP" - `We control the Hispaniola now, mate!' says a triumphant Long John Silver. "ASK SILVER ABOUT CAPTAIN" - `Your friends want to keep the treasure for themselves. If you help me, I'll give you a cut of the treasure'. "E" - as you are about to leave, Silver calls to you. `Jim. Wait! Your friends want to keep the treasure for themselves. Join us, and we'll give you a cut of the treasure. What will it be, mate, yes or no! The sailors begin to mutter among themselves. "NO" - the pirates stop grumbling, but still look at you menacingly. `You'd better get out of here quick', whispers Silver, `Or they'll kill you'. You run to save your skin. You are back on the beach of Treasure Island, there is a thicket to the north. There is now another path, freshly cut, leading to the northeast where you can see a Union Jack flying. As you look around you notice a small bottle has been washed up on the shore. "GET BOTTLE" - you pick up the bottle, open it, and find a rolled-up piece of paper inside. You unroll the paper and read the message. `Pirates now in control of the Hispaniola'. Your heart skips a beat. You put the note back in the bottle, and throw it out to sea so no one else will see it. "NE", "NE" - you are standing outside a stockade, the entrance is directly in front of you to the north. "N" - you are in the stockade, a crude prison built many years ago by Captain Flint. Captain Smollett, Squire Trelawny, and Doctor Livesey are sitting around a small smoky fire talking among themselves. `Jim!' exclaims the Doctor. `I'm surprised you found us. We fled to this stockade to protect our selves from the pirates'. "ASK CAPTAIN ABOUT SHIP" - `Silver's men may be on the ship but none of the pirates can navigate their way home'. "TELL DOCTOR ABOUT SILVER" - `As long as we are in the stockade, we are safe from Long John Silver and his motley crew. The most pressing issue now is to rescue the Hispaniola. "WAIT", "WAIT" - the Doctor stands up, `Jim I now that this sounds harsh but I promised your mother that I would assure your safety, so I'm forced to confine you to a room here in the stockade where you'll be safe. You follow the Doctor to a room where he leaves you and locks the door. The room is barren except for a bed and a window. "EXAMINE BED" - the bed is old and rickety and looks very uncomfortable. As you look closer, something on the floor catches your eye. "EXAMINE FLOOR" - you reach down and push the dirt aside revealing a metal ring. "PULL RING" - after much work, you pull the ring straight up. A hatch opens, revealing a passage leading down. "DOWN" - you enter the tunnel and close the hatch. You crawl through the tunnel, feeling your way as you go. After a short distance you come out in a hollow-out tree stump outside of the stockade, the entrance is directly in front of you to the north. "S", "S" - you are in the woods. To the southeast you hear the ocean lapping against the rocks. You can see the Union Jack waving above the trees to the north. "BLOW SHELL" - the sound of the conch echoes through the woods. Suddenly, the strangest man you've ever seen throws himself at your feet. He's cloaked in tatters of an old ship's canvas and old sea cloth. The man is dark-skinned, shaggy, and dirty. He looks very hungry. "GIVE SOME FOOD" - he chews the food quickly, then pinches you. `You can put your trust in Ben Gunn', he says. `I helps you if you got anything to ask me. "ASK GUN ABOUT FLINT" - `I was part of the crew Flint left on board his ship when he buried his treasure. Three years ago I joined up with some dirty swabs who returned to find the loot. But no, we couldn't find it. In disgust they leaves me here. I lived here for three years, just me and my makeshift boat. "ASK GUN ABOUT BOAT" - the boat is a little coracle, you can use it if you need to. I have hidden it under that white rock', he says pointing to the southeast. "ASK GUN ABOUT SHIP" - `I seen yer ship moored to the southeast. If you needs help to get out to her, you can use my boat. "ASK GUN ABOUT TREASURE" - Ben looks startled. `Treasure! What treasure?' Suddenly a wide smile breaks across his face and he begins to cackle. He pinches you again, then he runs away, shouting as he leaves. `You can put your trust in Ben Gunn'. "SE" - you are standing on a small rocky peninsula, you can see the Hispaniola a few hundred yards off shore. Next to you is a stony ledge and an unusual looking plant. "EXAMINE LEDGE" - under the ledge is a coracle. "EXAMINE BOAT" - the coracle is extremely small, barely more than a wooden frame covered with goatskin. You notice a small hole in the bottom of the boat. "EXAMINE PLANT" - upon close examination you see a sticky resin oozing from the plant. "TAKE RESIN". "PUT RESIN IN HOLE" - you fill the hole with the resin. Within a few moments a water-tight seal has been made. "LAUNCH BOAT" - you place the coracle in the water, and carefully climb in, and push off towards the Hispaniola at anchor a few hundred yards off-shore. CHAPTER FOUR You row the flimsy coracle all the way to the Hispaniola. The boat, despite its poor construction, has remained water-tight. In front of you sits the ship. You realize that rescuing it may very well be the most challenging thing you've ever done in your life. You are sitting in the coracle drifting in the calm waters near the Hispaniola. The anchor line of the Hispaniola is slack and within reach. "GRAB LINE" - you grasp the anchor line firmly with both hands. The sudden shift of weight pushes the coracle underwater and away from you. You are left hanging from the rope. "CLIMB ROPE" - you are on the foredeck of the Hispaniola. There are stains on the planks, and an empty bottle rolls from one end of the deck to the other as the boat rocks in the breeze. "EXAMINE BOTTLE" - it looks like an empty rum bottle. "EXAMINE STAINS" - they are blood stains, and they lead towards the rear of the ship. "AFT" - you walk to the midships, where you see one of the crew-seemingly unconscious on the deck. As you step over the man, he grabs your foot firmly with both hands. "TALK TO MAN" - `Well, ain't this a surprise! you remember your old mate. Israel Hands, don't you'. He continues, `Neither of us can sail this boat alone, mate. How about if you and I become partners, Captain Hawkins?' "YES" - `Okay, partner', he lets go of your foot. `First we have to get moving. You gotta raise the anchor'. "FORE" - you are on the foredeck of the Hispaniola, the line for one of the anchors lies at your feet. "CUT LINE WITH KNIFE" - you saw through the anchor line, and set the ship free. A length of rope falls to the deck. You see Hands midship manning the wheel. "AFT" - you are at midships, you and Hands manage to sail the ship around to the north side of the island, near the stockade. Luckily the winds are light and the sailing isn't difficult. Israel Hands says, `Now that we're sailing we can talk. Any questions, Captain Hawkins? Make it snappy'. "ASK HANDS ABOUT TREASURE" - `Long John Silver promised me a large cut of the treasure if I sailed to Treasure Island with him. Silver's a crafty one, though, and I don't trust him for a minute'. "AFT" - Hands yells to you as you walk aft, `Captain, while you're back there get me some rum'. You are on the rear deck, the ship has been ransacked. Piles of wood and glass litter the deck, along with the smashed apple barrel. "EXAMINE BARREL" - as you push aside the litter you discover a pistol. "TAKE PISTOL", "FORE" - as you begin to go foreward on the deck, you see Hands with his back toward you. He slips a knife up his sleeve. You remain on the reardeck. "FORE" - you are midships on the Hispaniola. Israel Hands is coming towards you with a knife."SHOOT HANDS WITH PISTOL" - slowly you draw the pistol, hoping to frighten Hands. Seeing your hesitation, Hands quickly draws the knife and throws it at you! You try to dodge out of the way but the knife's hilt hits your hand. Accidentally, the gun goes off. Israel Hands slumps to the deck, dead! You are so disgusted that you throw the pistol overboard. The ship stops with a lurch which nearly sends you over the side. The ship is resting on a reef about five hundred yards from the shore. Israel Hands lies in front of you, his head leaning against a small barrel. "EXAMINE BARREL" - the barrel is about three foot long and watertight. "TAKE BARREL" - you take the barrel and lower yourself into the water. Using the barrel for flotation you kick towards the shore. Once ashore you drop the barrel. You are next to a bubbling spring, you see a marsh to the south, and a short path to the west. "W" - you are standing next to a large rocky hill, there is an entrance in the hillside to the west. "W" - you are inside a large cavern, you see light filtering from the entrance to the east, and a dark passage to the south. There are huge stalactites hanging from the top of the cavern. "S" - you are standing inside what appears to be a large cave, you cannot see very well. The cave extends north and south where you can see faint sunlight. You sense someone, or something, watching you. You hear noises coming from deep within the rocky hillside. "BLOW SHELL" - the cave reverberates with the sound of the conch, you strain your eyes and see Ben Gunn before you. Rumbling sounds come from deep within the cave. "TALK TO BEN" - before you can tell him anything, Ben pinches you. Then he says, `I spoke to your friends, young Jim. They have faith in you. They won't desert you, not them.' His eyes widen as he cackles. `You will need my help again soon. Signal for me in the woods'. He scampers out off the cave before you can speak, laughing to himself as he goes. "S" - you emerge into bright daylight. Suddenly you hear a rumbling sound behind you. You turn to see the ledge over the cave entrance collapse. Large boulders roll down the hillside. When the dust settles the entrance is no longer visible. A rocky hillside faces you to the north, looking south you see a hill in the distance. To the west a swamp stretches for miles and to the east you can see somewhat firmer ground. "S" - you are standing on top of Spy Glass hill, you can see almost all of the island from here. To the southwest you can see smoke wafting up from the stockade. To the north you can see the path back down the rocky hillside from which you came. "SW" - you climb over the wall surrounding the stockade. It is very quiet and you wonder why your friends are not on guard. You decide to surprise them and silently creep inside. Suddenly you hear the piercing squawk of Silver's parrot as Silver grabs your arm. "TALK TO SILVER" - `Lookee here, mates, our young friend has deserted his comrades to help us find the treasure'. Silver smiles slyly at you. The other pirates look at you and Silver suspiciously. CHAPTER FIVE Time is running short! The pirates are ready to search for the treasure, and there has been no sign of your friends since you left to rescue the ship. You worry that your life as well as theirs may be endangered. The pirates have taken all your possessions to keep for themselves, but Silver lets you keep the conch shell. You are tied up inside the cabin of the stockade, your friends are nowhere in sight. There is a cask of brandy and some pork and bread spread out on a table. Silver appears to be the only sober one of all the pirates. He sits by your side, while the other pirates sit together and talk among themselves. "ASK SILVER ABOUT PIRATES" - Silver leans over and whispers in your ear, `You should be careful around these swabs, matey. They mean no good'. "ASK SILVER ABOUT DOCTOR" - `He and the rest of his friends gave up on you. They said that you were a traitor, and never want to see you again. "WAIT" - the pirates stand up and walk towards Silver. One of the pirates steps forward and sticks a piece of paper with a black dot in Silver's hand. Silver stares in surprise at the black spot. "WAIT" - before you can do anything, Silver springs up, whirls his crutch, and hits the pirate who gave him the black spot. The pirate falls limply to the floor. `I won't take none of this mutiny talk, mates', growls Silver. `And I'm willing to fight anyone who thinks otherwise'. The other pirates, afraid of Silver, back down muttering to each other as they cross the room. "EXAMINE SPOT" - it is a page ripped out of a bible with a black spot in the middle of it. Suddenly you hear a familiar voice calling to Silver from outside the stockade. Silver leaves the cabin and returns a few minutes later, and leads you outside. Doctor Livesey is standing there with a white flag in his hand. His eyes perk up when he sees you. Silver lets go of your arm and says, `Now, mate, Livesey here wants to chat with you. But don't run off, or I'll be blamed for losing a hostage'. He points to his gun. `I would hate to have to use this so early in the morning'. Silver steps out of earshot but watches you closely. "TALK TO DOCTOR" - `I don't have time to tell you the details, but we traded Silver the map for our lives. However, I have met a man on the island, Ben Gunn. He has been a great help to us. Stay close to Silver, he assured me that he would do his best to protect you from the others. I only hope we can protect you from him'. The Doctor signals to Silver that he is finished and leaves the stockade. Silver takes your arm and leads you back to the cabin. You are inside the cabin of the stockade. There is a cask of brandy and some pork and bread spread out on a table. The pirates seem quite drunk, they scowl at you and Silver as you enter. "TAKE FOOD" - you take a small amount of bread and pork. "TAKE BRANDY" - you take a sip of brandy. The alcohol burns your lips and you spit out the horrible mouthful. "WAIT" - Silver ties a rope around your waist. `It's to search for the treasure, lad, and to make sure your friends don't try any funny stuff, you're going to march in front of us and lead the way. Don't get any funny ideas about steering us the wrong way'. He gives you the map and leads you outside the stockade. `Now examine the map and let's get going'. "READ MAP" - the map says to go west. "W", "READ MAP" - the map says to go southwest. "SW" - you are standing at the foot of a large pine tree. Next to you entwined in a leafy vine, is a human skeleton with a few shreads of clothing still clinging to it. "EXAMINE SKELETON" - on closer examination you notice that the body is in a very unnatural position. The skeleton lies perfectly straight, the feet pointing in one direction and the hands, raised above the head like a diver's pointing directly south. "SOUTH" - you try to leave, but Silver and his men seem too interested in the skeleton to continue right now. Suddenly you hear a deep voice out of nowhere say, `Long John Silver, you leaves my treasure alone'. The pirates seem spooked by the mysterious voice. "ASK SILVER ABOUT VOICE" - `That voice! It sounded like Captain Flint'. "EXAMINE TREE" - out of the corner of your eye, you see Ben Gunn hiding behind a nearby rock, making the ghost-like voice. He winks at you, so you'll keep his little secret. "S" - you are standing on a plateau south of the woods. To the north, a large tree towers above the rest. "READ MAP" - the map says to go east. "E" - you come to a clearing near a cave, a recently-cut path leads north. A large red cross on the map indicates that the treasure is buried here. `This is it, boys', shouts Silver. The pirates tear into the ground with their shovels. Some furiously claw at the ground with their bare hands. Something's wrong! `There ain't no treasure here'. shouts one of the pirates. The growlings of the men turn into a roar as the pirates turn on you and Long John Silver. For the first time Silver looks scared. `You'd better run for it', he whispers as the pirates advance. "N" - you run as fast as your legs will carry you. You are in a thickly wooded grove. Paths lead north, south, and west. In the weeds, your eye catches a glint of metal. "EXAMINE METAL" - it is a rusted cutlass with the name `FLINT' scratched on the handle. "TAKE CUTLASS". N", "W", "N" - you come to a smouldering campfire. The Squire, Captain, and Doctor look serious and concerned about something as they talk quietly. As you approach, the Doctor looks up and exclaims, `Thank goodness you're safe. Tell us what happened'. TELL DOCTOR ABOUT PIRATES" - the Doctor replies, `We gave Silver the map, knowing that the treasure wasn't there. It was lucky that you got away when you did. Lead us back to the pirates. We're ready for them now'. "S" - your friends grab their guns and follow you back through the grove. As you walk the Squire lays out his plan to ambush the pirates. You and your friends arrive at the treasure site and position yourselves in the bushes around the clearing. You see that the pirates have tied up Silver and are muttering among themselves as they pass around a bottle of rum. The Squire fires the first shot and knocks the bottle of rum from the pirate's hand. The pirates, caught off guard, quickly grab their guns and cutlasses. You look over to Long John Silver tied up nearby. `Quick, mate', he calls over to you over the battle noise. `Untie me'. "UNTIE SILVER" - the rope is knotted too tight for you to untie. "CUT ROPE WITH CUTLASS" - you cut the ropes and free Long John Silver. In a flash he grabs a pistol and captures two of the pirates. With Silver's help, the others are quickly subdued, and the Doctor tends to the wounded as the Captain and Squire tie up the other Pirates. "BLOW SHELL" - the sound of the conch seems to travel around the island. Before the last echo dies, Benn Gunn is standing before you. He grins and gestures for you to follow him. "FOLLOW BEN" - you follow Ben into a large and airy cave. The cave is filled with gold and riches! It's Captain Flint's treasure! "TAKE TREASURE" - as you stuff your pockets with gold and coins you hear your friends laughing. `Don't be in such a hurry', says the Doctor. `You'll own more treasure than you can carry when we get it all back to Bristol'. "EXIT CAVE" - as you leave the cave, you look back at the treasure. You still can't believe your adventure was such a success. You spend the next few days preparing to sail back to England. On the morning of your voyage, the Doctor and the Captain approach you with Long John Silver. The Captain steps forward to talk to you. "TALK TO CAPTAIN" - `Jim, we've been discussing the proper punishment for the mutineers. We decided to maroon the other pirates on this island. That is punishment enough. We thought you would like to decide what we should do with Mr. Silver. Should we take him back with us to England for trail, or should we leave him here with the others?' "LEAVE SILVER" - transporting all of Captain Flint's treasure takes a long time. You see Squire Trelawny waving to you from the top of a hill overlooking the cave and path to where the Hispaniola is beached. `The Squire will make sure those mutineers don't get near the treasure now', exclaims Doctor Livesey. `He's a crack shot you know'. That afternoon you set sail for England, leaving the pirates and the adventures of Treasure Island far behind. In the last few months you have had your fill of adventures. Now, you look forward to returning to the Admiral Benbow Inn with your new found wealth. You don't know what became of Long John Silver. Surely a clever man like him could figure out a way to escape the island. Whether he did or not, you only hope never to see him again. But even Long John Silver cannot spoil your victory, you left England a naive child, and now return a wealthy adventurer.
