CALAMUS.TXT This is the Demo disk for Calamus. It does not allow you to save your layout work. But it does allow you to import a text (in GST's .DOC format or ASCII format (.TXT), import graphics (in nearly all formats), do all layout work and to print. One can use this disk to do limited layout work (a page or two, or signs, notices, name cards, etc.) This demo requires a full megabyte of memory. Load the program. It takes about two minutes to load. Click on the large arrow. Go to the ABCDEF in a square, and then choose create New File from the menu. Create a text block in the blank page that appears. It is in the text block that layout work can be done. On a 1040, there is no rooom in RAM for anything. By deleting the dictionary from memory, you free up an additional 80 KB. Do this by clicking on the Large A, upper left screen. This produces the text editing menu, left screen. In it, click on the small icon of an open book second icon to the right from the wire pliers icon. This is the dictionary icon. A dictionary menu appears. Double click on the thick dictionary. A screen appears. Just above the "OK", there is an icon of a dictionary flying into a waste basket. This deletes the dictionary from memory (but not from disk!). Click on it. The dictionary takes care mostly of the hyphenation (for example: se-pa-ra-tion). By not having it, you must separate words by hand. To reformat a text layout, click on the Reformat option from the Text menu. To use Calamus professionally, one must have at least 3MB in RAM, a harddisk, a laser printer, and a lot of patience.
