BESTSHELL - English instructions ================================ Although in German, this program is very easy to use - and as you can define all of the menu headings the program will be all English once you have set it up. Some Hints: - The layered menu's can become a little confusing at times; use the Clr Home key to return to the main menu if you get lost at a low level with no apparent way to get back to the beginning. - Ignore the drop down menu to start with - pressing any of the F1 to F5 function keys (or clicking on the menutitels) will allow you to define its function. - Once the Menu titel drop down menu is selected (has a tick next to it) you can edit the definition of a menu item. - Avoid nesting menus more than three deep - this way you can use the F10 and ClrHome keys to step back through the menus and free off one key on each menu that would otherwise be needed to give the return to menu n command. - Once you've figured out what Best Shell is capable of - make a flow chart of your intended menu structure. - If your most used programs are spread out over a number of floppies try to reduce the number of disks to three or less - this way you can have a main menu with one F key per disk; just remember to swap disks before hitting the F Key. And label your disks in line with the names you have given the menu titles. - On a system without a hard disk try setting up a (reset proof) RAM disks and auto load BESTSHEL and its data files to this at boot up. This way flicking between the desktop and Best Shell is almost instantaneous. - Installing Best Shell as an auto loading GEM application (see the utilities on DMG.13) and (on a one drive system) keeping all work files on a single floppy will give an "idiot proof" desktop: just punch the key for the required program. - Don't forget to save your menu once it is complete - use the Arbeit sichern option in the Menu ... drop down menu. - If you like it send 20DM to the author for the full version. (And drop a hint about liking an English version!) The menu commands: Clr Home - Returns to main menu. F10 - Toggles between the last two selected menu's. Zum Desktop - returns to desktop Menu verwaltung drop down menu: * Neus Menu anlegen - create new menu; maximum of 5 in this version. --- * Neuname Menu - re-name menu header * Menutitel anderen - Re-title and/or re-define menus - not required if a menu has not yet been installed. --- * Menu loschen - check names of menus --- * Arbeit sichern - save menu set up --- When selecting a yet to be defined menu, or re-defining a menu (selecting the menu with the Menu titel Flag on) a dialog box is displayed with the following options: Menu - define that selecting this menu will lead to another menu - the display that follows allows you to select the menu name that control will be passed to. Programm - define the program that will be be run when this menu item is selected. - Next dialog asks whether a parameter is to be passed to the application (ie a data file filename to be loaded automatically once the program is run) - click on Mit for yes or Ohne for no. - the Item selector is displayed. Click on the program to be run and click on OK, then give the menu item a name. (Although the item selector displays only applications with a PRG extender it is possible to define TTP and TOS applications also. All programs tried to date have been OK - but use this with some caution).
